Open Mic Poetry

Yesterday, as I was looking around for a good parking spot I stumbled across a local cafe/theater that was hosting an open mic poetry event today. I was uncharacteristically sparked to participate.

This is what I wrote at the end of the day about it:

I can't believe I am doing this, but I am going to do it. I know people generally think my writing is good. Since I'll never see them again, why not give it a go. Right?

When I walked in I was immediately relieved that it was mostly older people. That takes off the edge because I assume older people are less judgmental. Am I right? :| So I sat through most of it trying to work up the nerve.

David was cool. He had a poem that mentioned Bach. I liked it for it mentioned how words can not capture everything.

I went up and said I was passing through, saw the sign and figured why not. It's my first time ever doing this. I read #lifeismoreinterestingthanthat.

A couple people nodded at me on my walk back to my seat. The next guy mentioned he had word boxes to share. I guessed that, to a lot of poets, people who've dedicated themselves to using language to share and express, that the poem might seem as a personal jab. So I felt a bit goofy about it. But heck who cares.

After I took my time to give people the chance to chat me up if they wanted. David and some other guy snagged me. The other guy couldn't step back from politics which sucked. I would have preferred David alone. But it was cool to get something from it.
